Chosen 2025

From July 6–11, five Tasmanian teens attended the biennial teen leadership convention, CHOSEN. Leonardo Hendra, Alexandra Elliot, Eden Leo, Giles Hergenhan, and Sia Koolik were nominated by their churches for their leadership potential. The program included workshops, worship, and activities designed to equip young people with skills to serve their communities. The goal wasn’t for the teens to have everything perfected by the end, but for them to leave knowing they have resources and support as they grow into leaders in their own circles.

As the week drew to a close, the teens were sad to leave but grateful for what they had learned and the friendships they had built. Our Tassie teens certainly made their mark—always first to rise for a morning run and swim, even in the middle of a Queensland winter (to the horror of delegates from sunnier states!). At Launceston Adventist Church, Leo shared how meaningful it was to connect with other young people passionate about Jesus, while Alex summed up the experience perfectly: “We are CHOSEN on purpose, for a purpose.”

As mentors, we were proud to watch our teens step out of their comfort zones and into courage. Each embraced opportunities to grow in confidence and leadership—often in ways they may not have realised at the time. CHOSEN doesn’t change who they are; it strengthens the character and gifts God has already placed in them.

A small but powerful example came on the trip home. One of our girls struck up a conversation with a young child while waiting in line and, by “chance,” ended up seated next to him on the plane. They spent the flight chatting, bringing joy to each other and to those watching on. Moments like this reminded us why these teens were chosen: for their God-given ability to connect, lead, and serve.

Having once attended CHOSEN ourselves as delegates over 11 years ago, we know its impact lasts for years. It’s not just another event—it’s an experience our young people will carry with them for life.
